As the academic year draws to a close, the ten newly-elected winners of the Associated Students of Moorpark College (ASMC) election tell us about themselves and their goals for the 2019-2020 academic term as members of the ASMC student board.

Wyatt Endres: President

ASMC’s newly elected president is Wyatt Endres, a 19-year-old Simi Valley resident majoring in global studies. He hopes to transfer to UCSB or UCB with hopes of working for the State Department after receiving his degree. Endres was first introduced to ASMC when he landed a job at the ASMC office last fall.

“I thought it would be a good opportunity to help the school,” Endres said. “My main goal, the main goal of any student government, should be to try and get more students involved in on-campus events and on-campus student organizations.”

Kristopher Hotchkiss: Vice President

The new Vice President is Kristopher Hotchkiss, a 19-year-old communications student minoring in economics. Hotchkiss ran for this position because he was interested in getting experience in management.

“My main goal as Vice President of ASMC is to increase student involvement in clubs and campus events,” Hotchkiss said. “In my experience, becoming more involved on campus also can make you happier and feel like you’re actually a part of the college.”

Hotchkiss has had previous experience working in the ASMC office and feels he is good at managing relationships.

Poon Yuwawanit: Director of Academic Affairs

Poon Yuwawanit, a 19-year-old and biochemistry student will be the new Director of Academic Affairs. Yuwawanit decided to run for Director of Academic Affairs because she wanted to get involved in improving Moorpark College.

“I want to create a student of the month award for students to get an award for working hard, and have field trips for students to explore,” Yuwawanit said.

According to Yuwawanit, she is qualified to be a board member because she was a color guard captain in high school and an assistant director for a shelter program. Yuwawanit said she has experience with organizing events.

Sahil Vig: Director of Budget and Finance

The new Director of Budget and Finance is Sahil Vig, a 19-year-old finance student. Vig said he chose this position because he felt it’s where he could best apply his skills.

“My main goal is to give students more opportunities to get internships … We have great opportunities and resources that nobody knows about,” Vig said.

Vig wants to learn how to overcome obstacles from his predecessor and work with the rest of the board to deal with any challenges that arise.

Zubair Sidhu: Director of Constitution and Rules

18-year-old computer science student, Zubair Sidhu is the new Director of Constitution and Rules.

Sidhu heard about the position from people he knew on the ASMC board and decided it would be a great opportunity to contribute to the school and the community.

“I want to make sure the rules that are in place are accommodating … if there’s something that discriminates or excludes a certain group of people I want to make sure that gets changed … We have huge diversity on campus,” Sidhu said.

Sidhu said he plans to confront the obstacles by bringing his own knowledge and trying strategies that may not have been thought of in the past. According to Sidhu, he participates in Hackathons, programming competitions, which have taught him how to work well under stress.

Sophia Escalante: Director of External Affairs

The new Director of External Affairs is Sophia Escalante, an 18-year-old psychology student on the Pre-Med track.

“I made the decision to run on a whim, but the motivating factor was my desire to improve the school, and I felt that I could best accomplish this by running for a position that I was comfortable with. Out of all of the positions offered, I believe that I could best fulfill the responsibilities of Director of External Affairs,” Escalante said.

Escalante said her goals are to increase the student ID discount at local places, create a way for honors students to be able to keep track of their progress, and have more ice cream days. Escalante participated in multiple clubs which has given her the opportunity to organize events.

Jordan Ross: Director of Public Relations

The new Director of Public Relations is Jordan Ross, a 19-year-old student majoring in engineering. Ross decided to run for Director of Public Relations because it fit her personality the best.

“My major goal next year is to increase attendance at college events. I think that a lot of people don’t know about the events on campus, and I want more students to know and attend!” Ross said.

Ross plans to deal with challenges by having a positive attitude and seeking advice from her predecessor. Ross explained that she is excited to be able to interact with the community through this position.

Cecilia Nguyen: Director of Student Affairs

The winner for Director of Student Affairs is Cecilia Nguyen, an 18-year-old psychology student. Nguyen ran for this position because her friend in ASMC said it would be a good opportunity to get more involved in the community at Moorpark.

“I want to help Moorpark’s clubs grow in membership and creativity and help them create more events that are more appealing to the student body so that Moorpark college students can have a better college experience,” Nguyen said.

Nguyen was the executive assistant for Key Club in high school, overseeing the growth of Key Clubs in Ventura County was a part of her responsibilities.

Rebecca Gabra: Director of Student Services and Sustainability

Rebecca Gabra is the new Director of Student Services and Sustainability. She is a 19-year-old political science student. Gabra decided to run because increasing the environment and learning experience of students would be great involvement for her. Gabra plans to help Moorpark College by “promoting student welfare and advancing sustainability on campus.”

“A feeling of inclusivity and community on campus is extremely important to me. I hope to be working with many groups on campus as well as other directors to find events and activities the entire student body would be able to enjoy and take part in,” Gabra said.

Gabra said she was a Girl Scout for 12 years which gave her experience in working with a community and event planning.
