Students gathered for an activity-filled night on campus, enjoying crafts, a professional valentines photo booth and a screening of “La La Land.”

Moorpark Associated Students organized this event on Feb.15 in the Quad by following the style of their successful Halloween movie night, and were satisfied with the results.

“I think people are having fun, we have a pretty good turnout,” said Emily Kamal, the director of public relations for Associated Students.

Events on campus offer opportunities outside of pure academics. One of the goals of Associated students is to cement a sense of community. The have created nights such as these that bring students together to have fun without the stress of the classroom. Clubs on campus offer similar outreach helping students network on campus and often participate in events. Several clubs took the opportunity to boost membership by hosting games and advertising upcoming events.

“Whatever events Associated Students puts on we like to cooperate for more outreach,” said Adil Khan, a business administration major and Business Club member. “It’s about being active on campus and being well known.”

Among other clubs, Vegan club set up a table to raise awareness about healthy eating. The club’s goal is to promote veganism but also healthier diets in general. They want people’s food habits to be a journey that ultimately makes them feel better, said Vegan Club VP Megan Corwin.

Before the movie began, students took valentines pictures at the photo-booth in front of red and white heart balloons. Free pizza was provided with a student ID and even Moorpark alumni showed up to partake in the fun.

Erika Sosa, an Animal Science graduate from the college, is currently attending Pierce College but heard about the movie night from a friend and went to catch up. The free food and photo booth were big attractions to her as well as other students.

But pizza and photos were far from the only happenings. The college Art Club hosted a gallery in the Forum before the movie started and featured a room full of student works. They also handed out buttons and encouraged students to stop by.

Before the movie, there was a performance from Dance club, which is open for all students of any experience and often plans performances around campus. There was also a “no hands doughnut eating contest” that quickly led to a sugary free-for-all.

The night ended with students bundled in blankets enjoying “La La Land” in the upper quad, along with a variety of activities for everyone, making it a memorable Valentines Day for many in attendance.

“Free pictures and free pizza, that’s the way to get people to come,” said Hannah Navas, a communications major at the college.

Good article! Also loved the picture of students trying to eat donuts dangled in front of their faces. Laughed really hard!
