Oxnard College’s Associated Student Government has had a rough time getting their name out, said recently elected ASG President Anna VanderStouwe.

“I have talked to so many students and a lot of them don’t even know that the ASG exists,” VanderStouwe said. “I plan to do what the students think is needed so we can have more of an impact.”

VanderStouwe has been elected to be the new Oxnard College ASG president after students elected her in April to fill the position that Johnny Garcia Vasquez will be leaving.  VanderStouwe will also get help from her Vice President Desiere Mandujano, Treasurer Alejandro Tinoco, Secretary Rosa Infante and Public Relations officer Diana Lopez.

VanderStouwe said that in order to get more students involved with what ASG is doing, she plans to have more events to raise school spirit.

“My main point is to get more activities at OC; there is no school spirit,” VanderStouwe said. “I think I can take so much more from school than just a job.”

The political science major believes that running for the ASG president position was her calling.

“Oxnard is my school, and I like getting involved,” VanderStouwe said. “I thought running for president would be good for me since I am looking to be a poli sci major.”

She also mentioned that she was a member of the journalism club in high school and helped to coordinate the yearbook her senior year. She was also a girl scout and a member of a dance club.

VanderStouwe’s experiences, she said, will help her lead the ASG and Oxnard College in a new direction.

“All of life molds me,” VanderStouwe said. “I have always been a leader and I like to take charge. I am excited and I see a lot of progress.”

I hope this will be a better year for the ASG.”
