The Ventura Pirates women's soccer team claimed another victory over cross-conty league rival Moorpark, Tuesday Oct. 25, defeating them with a final of 4-0.
Anticipation was high and these two rival teams battled it out for the second time this season, the first being VC's 6-2 victory over the Raiders Sept. 30.
Ventura's head Coach Steve Hoffman was ecstatic over their triumph Tuesday night.
"The team played really well, especially in the first half," Hoffman said. "In the last game we gave two goals away and we didn't want to give two goals away tonight. So defensively we played a bit better. Of course when you play a team once and you learn a little bit about them and play them a second time, you kind of know what to expect. But they changed some things tonight and made it a little more challenging for us and the players responded very well."
The Lady Pirates dominated this home game while sporting pink jerseys in honor of October's breast cancer awareness.
Goal scorers for the Pirates included #17 Stephanie Hernandez, #11 Breanna Naranjo, #6 Yasmin Lepez, and #19 Brieanna Potracke.
VC's #11 Breanna Naranjo had this to say about the heated rivalry.
"It's always intense with Moorpark," Naranjo said. "They're aggressive but we've learned to play around that. We didn't let that get to us."
An aggressive game it was, with numerous fouls being committed by both sides, rough play and head-strong competition throughout the evening.
MC's #3 Marii Linares was yellow carded for consistent infringement of the rules of game play, as well as another player from MC being yellow carded for intent to injure.
It was a solid victory for VC, though Moorpark's goalie #30 Bailey Morley put up a strong fight against the Pirates in the first half repeatedly making impressive saves.
The Raiders came back strong offensively in the second half, but were unable to manage a goal.
Though both teams played extremely hard in such an intense and exciting game, VC's strategic offensive plays in the first half were no match for the Lady Raiders to overcome and the Pirates once again claimed victory.
Ventura leaves the match with a record of 14-2-0 overall and 8-0-0 in league. Their next match is at home against non-conference opponent Fresno City College.
