The Ventura College football let a win slip away last minute against Cerritos College Friday night. The Pirates cut it close with a score of 24-31.
Sophomore Offensive guard Logan Nester said the Pirates started off strong but failed to finish strong in the battle against Cerritos.
"In a nutshell it was a combination of being too comfortable with an early lead and failure to execute later when we needed to," said Nester.
Friday night was Ventura's first conference game this season after having a week off. The overall energy of the team was filled with nerves and anticipation.
The Pirates started out with a promising lead 7-0 in the first quarter following a touchdown by Freshman Quarterback Chase Smith.
The Pirates continued to dominate the first quarter by ending it with Smith hitting an open Matt Koman for a 36-yard touchdown pass to take a 14-0 VC lead.
Smith to Koman seemed to be a go-to play for the Pirates and it proved successful early in the game
In the second quarter Smith hit Isaiah Burton with a 38-yard touchdown pass to put VC up 21-7.
Cerritos started to make a slight comeback towards the end of the half with the score 21-16 VC.
With only 4 minutes left in the game, Cerritos took the lead, 31-24, on a 6-yard touchdown run from Donald Livingston
The Pirates lost their final opportunity to tie it up when Smith hit Koman for a 24-yd pass that was fumbled by Koman and recovered by the Falcons with 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter.
Cerritos ran out the clock with the scoreboard declaring their comeback win 31-24.
The Pirates play their 2nd conference game this Saturday at home taking on Bakersfield at 6 p.m.
