Oxnard College's Associated Student Government is encouraging students to become informed of current issues and get involved with campus organizations in an effort to combat increasing class fees.

ASG is actively involved with what goes on around Oxnard College and as the student leaders of the campus, they share the same difficulties faced by other Oxnard College students.

The California budget cuts have become more apparent since the beginning of the school year and classes are being cut back for the summer and fall of 2010.

March 4 was a day of awareness throughout the nation and world's educational systems. The day consisted of walkouts on many campuses as well as other form of public protests.

Anna VanderStouwe, ASG president, did not feel that a walkout at Oxnard College was the best way to get the message out there.

"It's a less productive way to protest," said VanderStouwe.

On March 2, students were encouraged to express their thoughts about all the recent budget cuts that are affecting their education in a meeting in the Student Lounge.

"It's not about the money, it's the purpose of the matter" said VanderStouwe.

VanderStouwe is hoping to clear any misconceptions some students are having reguarding the budget crisis and the role of faculty members. Faculty members are in the same position as the students; they have nothing to do with the crisis and are suffering right next to students.

"We need to learn to work with them [faculty members]," said VanderStouwe.

ASG is planning an event where students will get to engage with faculty members as well as each other to learn more about the budget problem. The event is planned to take place on March 16.

VanderStouwe is hoping that more students will attend the event, as well as having Richard Duran, president of Oxnard College, as a speaker. Students interested in taking part in the event can contact ASG at (805) 986-2094.

Also, the Student Voice got it wrong. We are having a small event on the 16th, but as for having Dr. Duran (OC's President) attending, that will not be until April 14th when we will have a larger, more publicized event for the students to fully attend and speak their concerns.

Ms. Chavez, I'd like to invite you to please come into the ASG office to speak to me in person. The ASG is doing what it can to help and support it's students. They are our main concern. I'd like you to know that although I have volunteered for the responsibility of ASG President, my lessons come first. I carry more than a full load of classes which keep me from attending the DCC Council. I attend others however and I have my members attend meetings as well, but don't forget that they too are students and have busy schedules. I understand your aggravation at needing a bus to attend the March in Sacramento and the ASG would have liked to have helped. Unfortunately, according to our Advisor, there are certain funds required for us to be able to help with that which we do not have. We did offer to help you and other EOPS students fundraise for the event, although I would have thought you were capable of coming up with other means on your own. Those "misconceptions" that our lovely Student Voice -quoted- me on were strictly about some students wanting to blame the faculty when in fact they are not the ones to blame at all. Again, if you're so inclined please come to one of our meetings and voice your concerns. We hold them every Friday at 9:30 a.m. You are welcome to come the Friday following our return from Spring Break.

And Ms. Chavez, if you feel that the leadership so far displayed is inadequate I also encourage you to run for the President position in this semester's elections. You can pick up an application in the ASG office, located next to the Student Lounge. Have a great day.

I really want to know what are Oxnard College ASG is doing for the students??!?! This year I have witness that they haven't done anything for the students. They are charging us a Student Rep Fee but they are not willing to use it to support a Bus for our College & EOPS Students to attend the State March in March to protest even more budget cuts. Also how can ASG President VanderStouwe clear up any misconceptions about the problems we are having about the budget cuts when she doesn't even attend the monthly District Chancellor's Consultation Council!!!! I must say this Year's ASG Leadership is the worst I have ever seen in my years at Oxnard College!
