Housing, transportation, education, employment and medical care are necessities in life that emancipated foster youth are left to find on their own.
With the aid of former Moorpark College faculty member and current member of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Larry Miller, also known as "Papa Larry," Miller has made it his goal to help meet the needs of the emerging youth.
"It was a chance meeting with a social worker [that got me started]," said Dr. Miller. "From there I got more and more involved."
Almost six years ago, Miller got involved with the emancipated foster youth when he met a social worker who invited him to a graduation party for the youth after their senior year. From there Miller got involved in general meetings, then with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and he is now involved with California Youth Connections.
Dr. Miller will give a speech entitled, "They call me Papa Larry," for the Year of Service, discussing the emancipation of foster youth and the joys and rewards of serving them. The speech will be given on March 10 in COMM-129 from 12 to 12:50 p.m.
