Although the man is frail, tucked into his wheelchair like a precious bundle, he has a silent strength and determination about him as well as a message that needs to be heard around the world.

Leopold Engleitner and his biographer Bernhard Rammerstorfer held an event at the Moorpark College Performing Arts Center as a stop on their “Unbroken Will 2009” tour as well as to celebrate the end of the Year of Democracy.

“You either sign the declaration or leave through the chimney,” Engleitner was told by an Nazi guard. “I said ‘I will not sign and I will not leave through the chimney. I will go home.”

Engleitner, a 103 year-old Jehovah’s Witness, is the oldest known living Holocaust survivor. When he was a young boy, he was studying the American Civil War as the most recent was in history; he read about the Titanic sinking in the paper; he met Emperor Franz Josef before the start of World War I.

When Engleitner first head the word “Hitler”, he thought the coming of the Germans was a good thing.

“It is a movement like the Boy Scouts and they will build cabins in the forest,” Engleitner's interpreter Robert Wagemann explained.

By mistake, Engleitner heard the German word “hutte” instead of “Hitler” because of his bad hearing. However, the Jehovah’s Witness would later experience first hand what “Hitler” really stood for.

Engleitner, who was born in 1905 in Austria, converted to Jehovah’s Witness in 1932 when fascism was overtaking his country. Between 1934 and 1938, Engleitner was imprisoned four times because he was preaching his religion, which became a criminal offense when the sect was not approved of by the state.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses in Austria heard of the uprisings in Germany and decided to keep their religious activities secret, however on April 4, 1939, Engleitner and other Witnesses were arrested during a religious celebration.

The charges were dropped, but the Gestapo, who had enough problems within the jurisdiction, invented “protective custody” to keep the Witnesses in prison. Protective custody let the Gestapo take anyone not sentenced in court to a concentration camp. Engleitner was sent to Buchenwald Concentration Camp on October 5, 1939.

After two years of humiliation and torture in Buchenwald and another two years at Niederhagen Concentration Camp, Engleitner had the opportunity to sign a declaration renouncing his religion, allowing him to leave the concentration camp and work as a farm hand.
Engleitner refused.

He was then transferred to the overcrowded Ravensbruck Concentration Camp in April of 1943. Two months later, Engleitner took the opportunity to leave the concentration camp to go into forced labor because renouncing his religion was not one of the stipulations of the contract.

Engleitner left the Ravensbruck Concentration Camp on July 15, 1943.
He was only 61.1 pounds when he returned home.

Engleitner's homecoming was short-lived, however when he was drafted for Hitler’s military. Engleitner refused to join and had to flee to escape the war. He hid in the Austrian Alps, dodging the Nazi fanatics looking for him until the end of World War II.

There were other Holocaust survivors that attended the event and volunteered to tell their stories.

Wagemann explained that he was targeted twice over by the Nazis because he was a Jehovah’s Witness and because his right leg was six inches shorter than his left at birth, he was classified as handicapped under the T4 Program. However, it was his family and his faith that pulled him through those trying times.

“Your parents make sure you have a strong faith to get you through situations like that,” explained Wagemann.

Renee Firestone also spoke of her survival of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. She explained the time when she was in front of the four incinerators with the chimneys spewing smoke and asking a female Nazi guard when she and her sister would be reunited with her parents.

“She said ‘there go your parents and when you go through the chimney, you’ll be with your parents,’” Firestone reiterated. “Of course, I had no idea what she was talking about.”

At Auschwitz-Birkenau, Firestone was separated from her sister and when she revealed to the audience that she was used for medical experiments, a hush fell over the crowd. She later had the opportunity to confront one of her sister’s “doctors” during the filming of the Steven Spielberg movie “The Last Days.”

“The horror stories from the camps are much worse than the human mind can observe,” Firestone said.

Marcella Gatlin, 27, was emotionally touched bt the presentations.

“I thought it was amazing listening to their stories,” said Gatlin, a Biological Sciences major. “Witnessing that kind of depravity must be difficult to get through, but to see someone speak about it with a smile on their face after is amazing to me.”

It is amazing how a chance meeting between and old man and a young man on a park bench in Bad Ischl, Austria lead to this once in a lifetime event.

“I asked him a great many questions. And he talked and he talked and he talked,” explained Rammerstorfer. “Not once has he shown anger or hate. He is one of the most content people I have ever met.”

Everyone who took the stage was amazed by Engleitner's spirit and energy.

Beatrice Gutai, who helped produce the event along with her husband Digital Film Professor Ferenc Gutai, mediated the event and summed up the crowd’s feelings for Engleitner perfectly.

“Almost 104 and still full of energy. He still puts some of us to shame, I think,” said Gutai.

When asked what kept him in such high spirits and good health, Engleitner explained.

“I am a happy boy. I enjoy everything and I have no time to die. I’ll be back.”

Engleitner and Rammerstorfer continue their “Unbroken Will 2009” tour with another sold-out engagement at Moorpark College May, 23 at 6:30 p.m., a sold-out event at the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust on May 24 at 7:30 p.m. and a book and D.V.D. signing at the Ronald Reagan Library on May 26 at 10:30 a.m.

People who complain about Jehovah's Witnesses always do so from the perspective of the organization, because they are near sighted,.. they only see what's in front of their face and don't see the whole panorama or deep issues as to WHY. It all comes down to how much you want to obey the creator (Jehovah) or not. Most people do not see it that way unfortunately,.. but we all have an accounting towards our Creator. The principles and conduct followed, merely follow what is set out in the Holy Bible, who is authored by our Creator Jehovah or Yaweh. Most people just basically do not want to follow what the Bible says... It's too much work or they can't be bothered,.. or it restricts their selfish desires and goals.

Jehovah's witnesses are the only religious group who follow the Bible to the letter. To people who complain about ones who are disfellowshiped from the organization for serious sins... Well that is right in the Bible. What about not accpeting blood? It's written in there too. What about preaching door to door about the Kingdom of God? That's what Jesus came to do.

The Creator of the universe Yaweh/Jehovah, has been misrepresented, ridiculed and painted as an unloving God for so many centuries. Most of mankind do not even use his personal name,.. Yet there is only one religious/spiritual organization that lovingly teaches, promotes and advertizes Jehovah's name, qualities, purposes, love and the changes he will soon bring to earth and mankind... Jehovah's Witnesses. That is a fact. For this they are ridiculed by those who don't care to know the deeper issues of why they are the way they are.

Jesus plainly stated: If they hated me, they will hate you also.. With no other religion is that apparent than with Jehovah's Witnesses, proving that this is the truth. In fact, Jehovah's witnesses was the most hated and persecuted religious group in the last century alone, including the USA & Canada and countless countries. Apostates are never happy with any explanations and just like the Devil, only accuse and put down those trying to do God's will, and use half-truths and outright lies to just tear down and deceive.

The fact that Jehovah's Witnesses in Nazi Germany were able to withstand the intense persecution and not give up or denounce their faith.. (Even though they were the only group to be given that chance) was not through any human strength.. It was only through God's power and holy spirit that they withstood the pressure and all while keeping such positive attitudes. This is God's work,. not man's.

Things around this wicked world are happening just as the Bible Foretold long ago. People who spew such hatred as has been done herein, come from people who either listen to lies spread by Apostates, who for whatever reason hate the Witnesses,
Jesus said we would be hated by the nations, and you are only helping prove Jehovah Never lies, only those who are falling into Satan's trap. Apostates have sealed their fate, right along with Satan and his demon hoards. Read the book of Job, and see what he went though without turning against Jehovah, our Creator, and Heavenly Father. Job didn't even understand why all of his calamity was brought upon him.
Satan challenged Jehovah in a gathering while all of the other angels were with GOD.
Satan wanted GOD Jehovah to do these bad things to Job. Jehovah cannot lie, or commit evil. But he did give Satan permission to persecute Job. First, in ONE DAY, all of his children, and many of his employes were killed, and all of his livestock were stolen.
When Satan saw that Job still refused to curse Jehovah, Satan again challenged GOD, saying that if only Jehovah would actually tough Job's person, that he would Curse GOD to his face.
Once again, Jehovah only gave Satan permission to do whatever he wanted to Job's person, short of actually killing him.
Job's whole body was covered with Malignant boils, and he was actually sitting in an ash pile, scratching his wounds with broken pottery. Yet, even though he seemed to think maybe GOD was doing these things to him, he still refused to dishonor Jehovah, saying: "May Jehovah's name still be blessed."
It is the same today, we, as Jehovah's Witnesses, know, just as GOD's own beloved Son was mistreated, tortured, and finally killed, we may be subject to the same hatred.
This is to refine our faith, and it actually strengthens us, only making GOD's people, Jesus Followers, our King, more resolved to remain faithful to our Heavenly Father, Jehovah.
Why would Jehovah have sent his most beloved Son to Earth to be born as human, and perform so many healings, and even resurrections, to buy us back from our sins we inherited from Adam, who was perfect, until he sinned, and lost that perfection, if not to prove it could and would later be done for all Mild Tempered ones on this Earth, who also loved Jehovah enough to suffer if need be to also prove Satan a liar.
We are like Olympian runners, who have trained for years and years, to make the grade, and prove they are worthy go compete in the Olympics. They give their all, and for what, sure a Gold medal or even Silver or bronze, and for the Glory, and money they may later get for allowing their likenesses and names to be used for advertising, and for the Financial gain. Once that is gone, since they still age, and eventually, no one even remembers their names, and they still age, and die.
Jesus and Jehovah have promised GOD's faithful ones life in peace and happiness forever, for loving him, and like Jesus did, proving Satan to be a liar.
Satan, as well as those who are used by him, will not get that same everlasting life.
Once they are gone, they will never live again, and will be forgotten.
One's losing their life now, is a small price to pay for the sanctification of Jehovah's holy name, and eternal life for all of the ones who remained faithful, to death if necessary. They will be resurrected to life everlasting, and have the wonderful privilege of welcoming back nearly everyone who has died up to this point.
The ones who never knew about God or his Son, and the glorious promises, will have a chance to be taught the truth of the Bible, and what really happened at the end of this Wicked System, and how they too may attain to everlasting life. This will all be accomplished without any interference from Satan or his demons, and others who refuse to accept Christ, the Messiah and our Reigning King.
I have known many JW's who were imprisoned in the U.S., as well as just about every other country.
You are helping us to prove Satan is the liar, and probably making many other peace loving people wonder how you as well as many others of Satan's menions

Jehovah's Witnesses come to our homes with a pretense that is fraudulent from the get-go.
You pitch that you are doing Jesus work (lie) you use all sorts of conversation starters to try to put us at ease, con and scam us into joining your sect, that is no better than any other.

D) Once they recruit you they will “love bomb” you in cult fashion to also recruit your family & friends or cut them off. There are many more dangers,Jehovah’s Witnesses got a bad rap for good and valid reasons.

I would like to address this comment. I take care of my aging parents see my grandchildren as often as possible and talk with and visit other family members that are NOT Jehovah's Witnesses. Blanket comments like this are often made because the person has heard such things and or due to personal experience and their own interpretation make comments that are ignorant. There are so many silly tales out there one is we eat dogs! I always recommend if a person wants the true facts they get the information from the horse’s mouth which would be a faithful Jehovah's Witness. You could liken disgruntled comments to an person arrested for murder has indeed been proven guilty sitting on death row and still saying "I didn't do it! "

Jehovah's Witnesses today, like the first-century followers of Christ, have hateful critics. Mr. Engleitner, the subject of this article, would have had his critics too. Unbelieving family members and friends would have questioned his loyalty to the State, reasoned with him to support the ruling authority, told him not to throw his life away for a God that wouldn't help him, and would have tried to convince him break his allegiance to God's Kingdom. Mr. Engleitner, a man that continues to remain neutral as to the political affairs of the world, that believes in the sanctity of blood, that continues to preach the Good News of God's Kingdom, and that will "love bomb" you with his positive attitude and God fearing integrity ... this man, and the brotherhood he belongs to, continue to take positions that are not easily understood. But, in fact, they are very simple. Follow Jesus teachings, obey God rather than men when their orders conflict, and owe your allegiance to the only government that has the authority to rule over man, God's Kingdom. Brother Engleitner did that as a child and continues to serve Jehovah honorably in spite of those who have lost their faith and promote hatred for a peace-loving international brotherhood of Christ's followers.

Jehovah's Witnesses are noted for their chief doctrine that Jesus had his second coming in 1914 and going door to door with Watchtower magazines, google * Jehovah's Witnesses Watchtower * for facts on this group.

Jehovah’s Witnesses creed:

A) They are at your door to recruit you for their watchtower corporation, they will say that “we are just here to share a message from the Bible” this is deception right off.

B) Their ‘message’ is a false Gospel that Jesus had his second coming in 1914.The problem with this is it’s not just a cute fairy tale,Jesus warned of the false prophets who would claim “..look he is here in the wilderness,or see here he is at the temple…”

C) Their anti-blood transfusion ban has killed hundreds if not thousands

D) once they recruit you they will “love bomb” you in cult fashion to also recruit your family & friends or cut them off. There are many more dangers,Jehovah’s Witnesses got a bad rap for good and valid reasons.

99% of the world has rejected the teachings of the Watchtower Jehovah’s Witnesses, the darker truth is they are a destructive and oppressive organization.

Jehovah's Witnesses don't go to war, they just let everybody else fight for them.

For the record it is true that Jehovah's Witnesses will not fight for their country and they didn't fight 'against' Hitler either. They were interned in Nazi concentration camps that were then liberated by young allied men who died to set them free.
NOTE:JW's didn't support the Allies either and despise the same (worldly) governments that protect their freedoms.

As pointed out ... Jews, Gypsies, the Disabled, Jehovah's Witnesses and Homosexuals were all unjustly jailed and murdered by Hitler's government. Jews, for being Jewish ... the Disabled for being disabled ... Gypsies for being gypsies ... and homosexuals for being homosexuals. None of these groups had a choice. Once identified, they were rounded up and imprisoned. Only JW's had a CHOICE - simply renounce their religion, swear allegiance to Hitler, and they would be let free. The vast majority refused to comply on "principle". Only JW's chose to suffer in Hitler's Germany or be imprisoned (and worse) throughout the rest of the world at that time for refusing to join the armies of their respective countries or support those efforts in non-combatant positions. They took and continue to take the side of Jesus who tells us that his Kingdom is no part of this world. Yes, Jehovah's Witnesses have fought in the courts to legally establish certain rights. These rights help them to continue the preaching and teaching work that Jesus commissioned. These same established rights help others, not associated with JW's, to freely assemble, speak freely, and promote their points of view. Jehovah's Witness are proud of the stand that our brother Leopold Engleitner took under such adverse conditions. He is an example for all of us. What if all German's had refused to support the Third Reich? What if all men followed Jesus, showed self-sacrificing love to their fellow man and refused to let any other person lead them away from God's righteous principles? What a different world it would be if all men looked to Jesus and his Father for their leadership and behaved as Mr. Enleitner.

Dear Tom, In answer to your comment, Jesus himself was tortured and died a humilating death. This was not something he enjoyed going through, yet he went through it because he had to to prove a few points, to do what was right and enable mankind to be saved from their sins. Jesus said that his followers are not greater than him, so of course, they would also be persecuted for doing what is right, even put to death. It has been that way since Christ was on earth and will continue that way until we finally get a world governed by the Almighty King, Jesus Christ. This is an important point and it was mentioned by Mr. Engleitner to show how important it is to have 'integrity', even taking that to your death. Then you know that you have pleased your Creator and will eventually receive life in that perfect new world!

Jehovah's Witnesses (the Watchtower legal dept) have won supreme court decisions that primarily benefited their 'right' to go door to door without being arrested for solicitation.

They DO NOT extend theses same freedom of religion to members who want to leave their sect.Members who want to leave are shunned by their own family and treated as condemned.

So lets get this straight, Jehovah's Witnesses were imprisoned because they wouldn't have anything to do with Nazism, they were hounded hunted caught and put in concentration camps, they were tortured, they were killed, many by beheading, all of which could have been immediately avoided if they just signed a document indicating that they would reject their faith and embrace Nazism. They refused. All of this is historic fact - so I guess the real objection is that not enough of them died? I sincerely hope that no one actually feels that way but that sure is how it sounds.

Can't we just be happy for the old guy? What's with all these comments. Whether he's a JW or not, shouldn't we be happy that he survived the holocaust? Of course there were other victims. We all know that.

Some of the Jehovah's Witnesses leaders like Joseph Rutherford did compromise integrity.

Individual Jehovah's Witnesses like Engleitner are proud of their record resisting Hitler and his Nazi.

God bless them all!

Over 6,000,000 Jews were slaughtered by the Nazis, and even many more millions of Jews suffered from persecution short-of-death from the Nazis. Approximately 5,000,000 "Non-Jews" were also slaughtered by the Nazis, including 100,000 homosexuals, 200,000 gypsies, and 200,000 disabled persons.

Compare those "millions" of victims with the "handful" of Jehovah's Witnesses. There were only approximately 6000 Jehovah's Witnesses in Germany during the 1930s-40s. While many of those 6000 German JWs were repeatedly arrested during the 1930s and 1940s, only a fraction were jailed or imprisoned for any significant length of time. Only about 200-300 German JWs lost their lives, and the majority of those died from any number of causes other than having been executed. Approximately 1000 JWs from other European countries lost their lives while incarcerated by the Nazis.

During that same time period, there were more Jehovah's Witnesses arrested and jailed in the United States than in Germany. In fact, from 1941 until 1945, approximately 4500 American Jehovah's Witnesses "elected" to go to prison rather than serve in the U.S. Military and go fight against those same Nazis who were committing those atrocities.

Approximately 3000 of those 4500 American JWs were even offered "conscientious objector" status, in which they were offered "non-combatant" work as a substitute, but 99% of those JWs refused to even help out that much.

In fact, it is an insult to memorialize the handful of anti-societal trouble-seeking JWs alongside the MILLIONS of Jewish Holocaust victims given that Jehovah's Witnesses view the Jews much as did the Nazis.

The WatchTower Society teaches its own version of "replacement theology", which says that GOD rejected the Jews as His "chosen people", and replaced them with today's "Jehovah's Witnesses". In fact, the title "Jehovah's Witnesses" was originally applied to the Jews by the Prophet Isaiah, and is even quoted on the wall at the entrance to the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C.

The WatchTower Society, in calling its own members "Jehovah's Witnesses" is attempting to steal that designation away from the Jews. The WatchTower Society even teaches that all of the Bible's promises of restoration for the Jewish people now belongs to the followers of the WatchTower Cult.
