Vanquish offers helter skelter future combat

Vanquish, the new game from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami and developer Platinum Games, plays like a cover shooter like Gears of War mixed with the speed and pace of Devil May Cry. The Student Voice got a chance to try out the game on PlayStation 3 in publisher SEGA's E3 booth.

The first thing that strikes you while playing is how beautifully intense the visuals are, with a color palette that extends beyond the usual greys and browns of typical cover-based shooters. Everything also moves faster, with a high frame rate that never manages to slow down with giant robot enemies shooting hundreds of rockets all over the screen. A button on the controller is even dedicated to power sliding from cover to cover, amping up the pace of the action, even when worrying about hiding from enemy fire. The guns control as you would expect and "sticking" to cover feels about right for this kind of game.

The only problem I found was a strange overload of icons and secondary information on screen. Your inventory of guns is always visible, as is your power meter for your slide ability and even how many rounds you have left before a reload. This is strange considering this console generation has seen games that go out of their way to hide this info, or at least blend it into the gameplay more subtly, in an effort to up the feeling of immersion.

Despite this, the game looks to be shaping up well, and it might just be able to stand tall with the big boys in the third-person shooter arena.
