MC brings life to a classic in Thorton's 'Skin of our Teeth'

The MC Theatre Arts department will perform its newest highlight, "The Skin of Our Teeth," a classic American comedy by Thorton Wilder, which will make its debut on Oct. 22.

In "The Skin of Our Teeth," Wilder tells the story of the Antroupist family attempting to save civilization and the struggles they face along the way.

"It moves me; it touches my heart," said director Eileen Kennedy. "It’s our emotion and
connection that keeps us together."

According to Kennedy, “The Skin of Our Teeth” doesn't follow the norm, as far as plays go; it involves the audience in the storyline.

"It was a new convention to break the fourth wall, the wall between the audience and the players," said Kennedy. "It invites the audience into their plight."

Kennedy believes that it’s not just the storyline that interests people, but also the relevance of this storyline to today's problems such as the war and the environment.

"It comes alive under conditions of crisis," said Kennedy. "Our recent economical upheaval is fertile ground for this play today."

Audience members will be kept on their toes with thought provoking ideals.

"Theatre is entertainment first and provokes thought as a bonus," said Kennedy. "It makes us enquire into our reason for being."

"The Skin of Our Teeth," will be performed Oct. 22-24 and 29-31 at 8 p.m. A matinee performance will be held Oct. 25 and Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $8.00 for students, $9.00 for seniors and Moorpark College Staff and $16 for adults. The Moorpark College Foundation will host a fundraising reception prior to the performance for members of the community on Oct. 24. The reception will consist of cocktails and appetizers on the third floor of the library, and will end at 7:30 p.m.
